How Obesity Affects Your Intimate Life

A lot has been said regarding physical appearance and sexual life, and many times it has erroneously been sustained that it’s mainly a matter of taste. Here we are exposing some of the reasons why obesity can be seriously affecting your intimate life:

1. Lack of sex drive – There are two main reasons that cause this: one psychological and one physical. The main psychological cause of not wanting to engage in sexual interaction is related to the low self-esteem that people with obesity tend to experiment, sometimes leading to isolating themselves and having a 60% higher chance of being depressed. In the organic end we have lower levels of testosterone (also known as the male hormone) which amount in an obese person’s bloodstream is significantly lower; testosterone is also responsible for sex-drive.

2. May cause erectile dysfunction – This has been proved by French and British researchers and it’s due to a malfunction of the organism. There are plenty of studies conducted worldwide that obesity has a significant impact in a man’s sexual health, showing there is a significant correlation between ED and degree of obesity, which is also due to the lower level of testosterone together with hypertension and emotional reasons that these individuals have.

3. Increases risk of vaginal infections such as Candida in women – This is because obesity lowers one’s immune system, predisposing the body to diseases. Moreover, vaginal infections such as Candida, are related mainly to a healthy diet: a wrong nutritional schedule can awake bacterias that will have this sort of consequences on a woman’s body and private area.

4. Reduces drive in parters – Of course, sex and pleasure are also a matter of aesthetics and not only physical reactions. Thus, an obese body presents clear signs of disease and it doesn’t respond properly to the partner’s arousal. Another reason is due to body odor and sweating which is significantly higher in obese people than those with average weight.

5. Lack of sexual satisfaction, unintended pregnancy and abortion – Indeed, obese women have four times more unplanned pregnancies than healthy-weight women, even considering that they have less intercourse due to the lack of sexual drive and satisfaction. Also, obesity inhibits sexual receptors, lowering the pleasure and the actual satisfaction and, at times, impeding the orgasm. Miscarriage episodes are also more frequent because of malnutrition that usually derives from an unhealthy diet and the weight pressure on the fetus.

It’s important to understand that obesity is a serious condition and it takes small but progressive steps towards change, not only to improve your sexual life but your health in general. Here are some tips to weight to improve your health and sex life:

1. Start exercising gradually – Of course it makes no sense to say to start running 1h a day, especially since it is very hard to make physical efforts if you have so much extra weight. Start by walking 1h a day for at least 8 weeks, and after you’ve reduced some of your body fat you can change to maybe a stationary bike or a treadmill for 30 minutes a day during the next 6 months. If joining a gym is not something you feel comfortable with you can also buy used fitness equipment online which you can then re-sell if afterwords you decide to enroll in a gym.

2. Healthy dieting – This will not only improve your sexual life but it will also boost your immune system and preventing you from developing illness. Sometimes obesity is not about excessive amounts of food but the wrong types and at the wrong times. Of course the right thing to do is to visit a nutritionist to develop a dieting plan, but the basics are to eat 5 to 6 small meals a day, avoiding saturated fats and instead eating a great amount of fresh fruits and vegetables, plus white meats, fish and legumes.

3. Seek counseling – In many cases obesity is related to depression and difficult life events that have led to over-eating . Seeking psychological help might be one of the best first steps to keep you moving further in your battle against obesity, and sometimes there are even group therapy sessions in which you can discuss progress and difficulties with other people that are going through the same problems as you are.
